REACH for Nepal's Livelihood Support Package

The recent lockdown has significantly affected many at-risk communities in Nepal. To date, the 3 month lockdown has resulted in thousands of job losses, including many in the tourism sector. Being a third world country, many people in Nepal were already below the poverty line, struggling to make ends meet, and the impact of COVID-19 has now amplified this situation. The latest predictions reveal the effects of COVID-19 will be felt for years to come.

In response to this desperate situation, the REACH for Nepal (RFN) foundation will now use its networks on the ground in Nepal to provide financial assistance to enable some families in communities to have food on the table who otherwise would not be in a position to do so.

We will be engaging with community leaders to identify families who are struggling to make ends meet as a result of job losses due to COVID-19.

RFN's 'Livelihood Support' package will see the identified families in the community get Rs 5,000 per month for the next three to six months.

The criteria for families to qualify for livelihood support are as follows -

  1. The families will be identified by local authorities, the village chairman or people of some standing in the villages where RFN has already provided humanitarian and other assistance.

  2. Candidate families can also be identified by the RFN Tactical Advisory Group (TAG) in Nepal. TAG is a group of respected people who voluntarily support the foundation in Nepal by providing practical advice on what assistance is required in particular communities.

  3. The bread winner of the family to have lost income in the last three months directly/indirectly due to Covid-19 and have no other source of income

  4. Processes will be in place to ensure financial aid will only be used to purchase food and other essentials to sustain the health of the family

It is anticipated the initial relief package will be for a period of three to six months, subject to circumstances not changing, with the families’ situation to be reassessed mid-October.
